Why the Confusion Exists
This is the important part, and almost nobody explains it.
In a conventional petrol car, the 12V battery has to spin a starter motor and crank a cold engine. That needs high cold-cranking amps, which needs a physically large battery.
In the City e:HEV, it doesn’t. The petrol engine is started by the hybrid system’s motor-generator, drawing from the 172.8V lithium pack — not by a conventional 12V starter. The 12V battery’s job is much lighter: wake the computers, run the lights, locks, screen and accessories.
So Honda specifies a small battery. A B19L is roughly the size you’d find in an eco car.
Where S95 comes from: the larger Honda e:HEV models — Civic e:HEV, CR-V e:HEV, Accord e:HEV — and Honda’s Start-Stop petrol cars do use big enhanced batteries in the S95 / Q85 family.
