Complete Mazda 3 Battery Replacement Guide Phuket
The Mazda 3 is a highly popular compact car with beautiful design, fun driving dynamics, and advanced SkyActiv technology. However, many people may not know that each Mazda 3 generation uses different batteries. Especially the BP generation (2019+) which has the i-Stop system installed as standard, requiring EFB batteries only.
I’ve encountered many customers who installed standard batteries in their newer Mazda 3, only to have them fail within 2-3 months because the i-Stop system works very frequently. This article will explain everything about Mazda 3 batteries in the simplest way possible.
Mazda 3 Generations and Battery Types
Mazda 3 has 3 main generations sold in Thailand, each using different batteries:
BL Generation (2009-2013):
- No i-Stop yet
- Uses standard 55D23L battery
- Price: ฿2,200-2,800
BM Generation (2014-2018):
- Some models have i-Stop
- Uses 55D23L (non-i-Stop models) or Q85 EFB (i-Stop models)
- Price: ฿2,200-3,800 depending on variant
BP Generation (2019-Present):
- i-Stop in all variants
- Must use Q85 EFB only
- Price: ฿3,200-4,500
Why Mazda 3 BP Generation Must Use EFB Battery
Mazda 3 from the BP generation (2019 onwards) has the i-Stop system installed as standard in all variants, whether C, S, SP, SP Sport, or X models.
The i-Stop system automatically turns off the engine when stationary and restarts it when the driver releases the brake. It works similarly to Toyota/Honda’s Start-Stop, but with a special feature: Mazda uses a faster starting system, making it start more frequently than other brands.
This is why Mazda 3 BP generation must use EFB batteries only. Standard batteries are strictly prohibited.
How to Check if Your Mazda 3 Has i-Stop

- 2013 and below = No i-Stop
