Volvo EX30 vs Polestar 2 2026: Why the Recall Settles It

Volvo EX30 (฿1,959,000) vs Polestar 2 (฿1,999,000) — same Geely parent, very different situation. The EX30's global battery recall and Thai stop-sale order make this comparison unusually one-sided in 2026.

Volvo EX30 vs Polestar 2 2026: Why the Recall Settles It

Both the Volvo EX30 and the Polestar 2 are premium Swedish EVs under the same Geely Holding umbrella, sharing platform and technology. On paper this should be a close comparison about design and positioning.

It isn’t, and we’re not going to pretend otherwise. The EX30 is subject to a global battery recall and a Thai stop-sale order that was still in force as of July 2026. That has to lead.

The EX30 Recall — Current Status

ItemDetail
ScaleGlobal recall covering more than 40,000 EX30s
Affected buildsSingle Motor Extended Range and Twin Motor Performance, built 2024-2026
Root causeManufacturing defect in high-voltage cells supplied by Shandong Geely Sunwoda Power Battery Co — at high states of charge the cells can overheat and, worst case, catch fire
Interim measureDo not charge above 70%
RemedyFree battery module replacement, from 22 May 2026 — around 3 days in the workshop
ThailandTwo fire incidents, including one during home charging on 15 May 2026
RegulatoryThailand’s Department of Land Transport issued a stop-sale order; the consumer protection board summoned Volvo
Sales statusDiscontinued in Thailand; no confirmed resumption as of July 2026

Volvo is also winding the EX30 down more broadly, which compounds the resale and parts questions rather than resolving them.

If you own one: book the free battery module replacement, and keep to the 70% charge limit until it’s done. That’s the single most important thing on this page.

The EX30’s 3.6 s is genuinely startling for a compact SUV, and in a world without the recall it would be a real selling point.

Different Cars, Different Buyers

Volvo EX30 — compact urban SUV

4,233 × 1,837 × 1,549 mm. Scandinavian-minimalist, aimed at city buyers and younger owners. Competes with BMW X1, Mercedes EQA, Tesla Model Y.

Polestar 2 — fastback sedan

4,606 × 1,985 × 1,479 mm — longer and lower. Aimed at professionals and premium buyers. Competes with Tesla Model 3, BMW i4, Audi e-tron GT.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Volvo EX30

Strengths: 3.6 s to 100 km/h, the quickest compact SUV in its class; Volvo’s safety reputation and established Thai service network; genuinely premium interior materials; 162 mm of ground clearance, which matters more on Phuket’s back roads than people expect.

Weaknesses: the recall and stop-sale order dominate everything; shorter range at 400 km; smallest boot at 318 L; resale value has fallen sharply; and the model is being wound down globally.

Polestar 2

Strengths: 540 km range, 140 km more than the EX30; fastest charging here at 205 kW (10-80% in 22 minutes); Google built-in (Android Automotive) is the best factory infotainment in this pair by a wide margin; larger 405 L boot; unaffected by the EX30 recall.

Weaknesses: a low sedan, so no useful ground clearance; heavy at 2,113 kg; thin Thai service network (around five showrooms); marginally more expensive.

Five-Year Cost, Including Depreciation

ItemVolvo EX30Polestar 2
Purchase price฿1,959,000฿1,999,000
Financed over 5 years฿2,205,000฿2,250,000

Maintenance฿35,000฿35,000
Comprehensive insurance฿180,000฿200,000
Depreciation over 5 years-50% (recall impact)-35%
Net five-year cost~฿2,328,000~฿2,217,000

The Polestar 2 works out roughly ฿111,000 cheaper once depreciation is included — and that gap is driven almost entirely by the recall’s effect on EX30 residuals.

Which Suits Phuket?

Polestar 2 is the straightforward recommendation right now. Longer range, faster charging, better infotainment, no recall overhang, and there’s a Polestar presence in Phuket (opened late 2025).

Volvo EX30 — if you specifically want a small Volvo SUV, wait until the recall programme is fully closed and sales have formally resumed, then reassess pricing. Do not buy one on the used market without written confirmation that the battery module replacement has been completed.

Honest caveat on the Polestar: if you regularly drive unpaved roads to viewpoints or villas, 151 mm of clearance is genuinely limiting. The EX30’s 162 mm is the better tool for that, recall notwithstanding.

Verdict: Polestar 2

Not because it’s a dramatically better car — the EX30 is quicker and more practical in some ways — but because in 2026 you can buy one, insure it, charge it above 70%, and sell it later without an open safety campaign attached.

Volvo EX30฿4,500 - ฿6,500We can also advise on recall status and the 70% charge limit
Polestar 2฿3,200 - ฿3,800AGM, plus Google Automotive system check

On both cars, the 12V auxiliary battery is what actually leaves owners stranded — not the traction pack. A flat 12V means the car can’t wake up, so it can’t even start charging.
