Thailand's Charging Network in 2026 — 9,049 DC Connectors and a 12,000 Target

Thailand had 4,817 charging stations and 14,486 connectors by April 2026, of which 9,049 were DC — up 56% since late 2024, against a government target of 12,000 DC chargers by 2030. So why are there still queues?

Thailand’s charging build-out is real and fast. It also has not made the queues go away, and the reason is worth understanding before you decide whether to rely on public charging.

The government target is 12,000 DC chargers by 2030 — which, at 9,049, is already three-quarters met with four years to run.


The three networks that matter

  • EV Station PluZ (PTT Group) — roughly 30% of the market, 650+ stations, targeting 7,000 chargers by 2030
  • EA Anywhere — 550+ stations, 2,800+ chargers
  • PEA Volta — the provincial electricity authority’s network, 420+ stations, consistently among the cheapest tariffs

A separate government goal — chargers no more than 200 km apart on all major highways — was expected to be met by late 2026.


So why do you still queue?

Because the constraint is concentration, not total capacity. Three things stack:

1. Time. 9,049 DC connectors is plenty of capacity on a Tuesday morning and nowhere near enough on the Friday before a long weekend. Annual averages say nothing about the experience.

2. Throughput per connector. An EV occupies a DC connector for 20-60 minutes. A petrol pump serves roughly ten times as many vehicles in the same period. This arithmetic is why chargers can look sufficient on paper and still produce queues.

3. Power tier. Everyone picks the fastest connector, so high-power DC fills while nearby AC sits idle. The EVAT data shows it plainly: public AC connectors actually fell 4% over the same period that DC grew 56%, because operators are following that behaviour.

What this means specifically in Phuket

The island’s position is different from the national average in two ways, and both work against you.

Few main roads. Charging demand concentrates onto a small number of corridors rather than dispersing across a grid.

Tourist seasonality. Demand at the same site can be several times higher in high season than in low. A national average has no way of describing that.

The practical consequences:

  • Home charging is the actual solution here, not a nice-to-have. A wall charger costs about ฿15,000-30,000 installed and pays back in one to two years for a regular driver
  • Charge to 80%, not 100%. 80-100% takes almost as long as 10-80% because the car tapers power to protect the pack. Filling to 100% on a DC charger wastes your time, lengthens the queue behind you, and does the battery no favours
  • Always plan a backup site. Broken chargers that still show as available in the app are worse than queues, because you only find out on arrival
  • Register the operator apps before you travel, not standing at the post

Home charging versus peak DC is roughly a threefold difference. That gap, not the queue, is the strongest financial argument for installing at home.


One thing more chargers will not fix

The 12V battery. Fast DC charging in this heat is hard on the high-voltage pack, but the component that actually strands people here is the small one: roughly 18-24 months in Phuket, ฿2,500-6,500 to replace, covered by no warranty.

A car with a dead 12V will not charge, will not unlock and will not move — regardless of how many chargers are nearby.
