BYD Atto 3 vs MG ZS EV 2026: Which Compact Electric SUV Is Better Value?

Thailand’s compact electric SUV class is still dominated by two cars: the BYD Atto 3 Extended at ฿949,900 and the MG ZS EV Long Range at ฿1,099,000. Both are sensible five-seat family EVs. One is ฿149,100 cheaper and has more of almost everything — but that isn’t the whole story.

What Each One Is Good At

BYD Atto 3 — more of everything, for less

Strengths: BYD’s Blade LFP is the safest chemistry in this class and famously passes nail-penetration testing; 480 km range is roughly 80 km more than the MG; the interior is genuinely distinctive (the “yoga console” and guitar-string door pockets); 204 hp and 310 Nm make it noticeably quicker; locally assembled, so it qualifies for the ฿50,000 EV3.5 subsidy; conditional lifetime battery warranty.

Weaknesses: the interior styling divides opinion sharply — some buyers love it, others find it gimmicky; the rotating touchscreen isn’t for everyone; service coverage outside major provinces is still thinner than MG’s.

MG ZS EV — the safer institutional choice

Strengths: MG has been established in Thailand for over six years with 200+ dealerships, and that maturity shows in parts availability and service response; the interior is conventional and calmly designed, which many buyers actively prefer; MG iSMART is the better connected-car system of the two; conditional lifetime warranty.

Weaknesses: ฿149,100 more expensive; 77 km less range; 30 hp less power; smaller boot at 359 L.

Five-Year Cost of Ownership

Assuming 20,000 km/year, ฿5/kWh, 3.5% interest:

Charging in Phuket

Both work with EA Anywhere, PEA Volta and MEA EV. On a 7 kW home charger expect 8-10 hours for the Atto 3’s larger pack and 7-9 hours for the MG. On DC the Atto 3’s 88 kW finishes roughly five minutes sooner than the MG’s 76 kW.

For island driving, note that both are heavily over-specified on range: Phuket is about 50 km end to end. Range only becomes decisive on mainland trips.

Verdict: BYD Atto 3 on value

The Atto 3 wins clearly on paper and on cost. The honest counter-argument for the MG is service maturity and a cabin design that won’t divide your household — and for some buyers, ฿178,000 is a fair price for that certainty. But most people should buy the BYD.

On both cars, the part that actually strands owners is the 12V auxiliary battery, not the traction pack.
