Tesla’s Contactor Recall: 12,963 Cars That Can Lose Power With No Warning
In late October 2025, Tesla recalled 12,963 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in the US because a battery pack contactor can open on its own while driving, causing a sudden loss of propulsion.
What makes this case more serious than it first appears: there is no advance warning. The centre screen only tells the driver to pull over safely after it has already happened.

The technical cause: what a contactor does and why it matters
A contactor is the power switch for the high-voltage battery. It connects the pack to the drive system. When the car is parked the contactor opens, isolating high voltage from the rest of the vehicle — this is why a parked EV is safe to work around. When you drive, it closes so current can flow.
The contactor is held closed by a solenoid — an electromagnetic coil.
The defect: a batch of contactors was built with InTiCa-brand solenoids that have a poor coil termination connection. When that connection fails, the coil loses its holding force, the contactor opens, and the pack is instantly disconnected from the motor.
The supply chain involved:
- Sistemas Mecatrónicos InTiCa S.A.P.I. (Mexico) — solenoid maker, tier 2
- SongChuan (Taiwan) — contactor maker, tier 1
It’s the same pattern as the Volvo EX30 case: a small component from a second-tier supplier is enough to recall an entire production batch.
Get this right: there is no advance warning
Some coverage claimed a “Reduced Power” warning appears first. That does not match the recall filing.
According to the documentation, the vehicle does not warn before losing propulsion. The centre screen displays an instruction to stop safely after the event.
The practical consequence matters: owners cannot watch for symptoms. The only real protection is to check your VIN and get the remedy done.
What to expect if you’re driving an unrepaired car: steering and braking continue to work — they’re independent of the drive system — but there will be no power. Coast out of the traffic lane onto the shoulder, put the hazards on, and contact Tesla.
What about Teslas in Thailand?
Most cars here are unlikely to be in scope, for reasons of build origin:

Don’t assume, though — recalls are tied to VINs, not countries, and some grey-import cars do reach Thailand.
How to check properly:
- Find the 17-digit VIN (lower left of the windscreen, driver’s door jamb, or in the Tesla app)
- Enter it on Tesla’s recall lookup page
- Or open the Service section of the Tesla app — outstanding recalls appear there
- Repeat at least annually, since new campaigns are issued periodically
Tesla’s remedy
- Replacement contactor certified to contain no InTiCa solenoid and to maintain its coil termination connection
- No cost to the owner
- Performed at a Tesla Service Centre — this cannot be fixed with a software update, because the defect is physical
Tesla’s 12V battery: far more common than any recall
In Phuket, almost every Tesla call we actually attend has nothing to do with contactors — it’s the 12V battery. And there’s a widespread misunderstanding here.
Tesla uses two completely different 12V batteries

An AGM cannot be substituted for the lithium unit — it is a different system entirely, with its own electronics that communicate with the car over a data bus.
What we see in Phuket
- Parked at the airport for 1-2 weeks, then the doors won’t open on return
- Centre screen dead, app can’t connect
- A low-voltage warning had appeared earlier and was dismissed
Phuket-specific causes
- Sentry/camera monitoring left on during airport parking — a continuous 12V draw
- Cabin overheat protection working far harder here than elsewhere, because of the sun
- Repeatedly opening the app — every check wakes the car, and this is the most overlooked cause of all
- Under-bonnet temperatures of 50-60°C accelerating AGM degradation

Checklist for Tesla owners in Phuket
On recalls
- Check the full 17-digit VIN against Tesla’s lookup at least once a year
- Open the Service section of the app periodically — outstanding recalls surface there
- If you bought a grey import, check more carefully — you’re outside the local distributor’s notification chain
On the 12V
- Turn off sentry/camera monitoring before long airport parking if the car park already has CCTV
- Turn off cabin overheat protection when parked in shade
- Stop checking the app repeatedly while you’re overseas
- Leave the main pack at roughly 50-60% before a long stay
- Test the 12V every 6 months, particularly AGM units past 18 months
On the traction pack
- Model 3 / Y Standard Range (LFP): charging to 100% is normal, and periodically desirable so the system can recalibrate its SOC estimate
- Model 3 / Y Long Range (NCA/NMC): 20-80% day to day, 100% only before a long trip
- Parking beyond two weeks: leave it around 50-60%, not full and not nearly empty
