The 47th Bangkok International Motor Show closed on 5 April 2026 with 132,951 bookings, the highest in the show’s history and 71% above the 77,379 recorded in 2025.
For the first time, a Chinese brand finished first.

Eight other Chinese brands also placed in the top ten. The total accounted for roughly 21% of Thailand’s full-year sales target for 2026 — which is why the Bangkok show still carries real weight rather than being a display event.
What made this result unusual
It happened straight after a price rise, not a price cut. EV3 had expired, EV3.5 had cut the subsidy to ฿50,000 for locally assembled cars only, and Chinese brands had raised Thai prices in February — the Dolphin by 33%, the Atto 3 by 21%. A record booking total in that context is not what the standard “cheap Chinese EVs” story predicts.
Fuel prices were moving at the same time. Contemporary coverage tied the surge in EV interest partly to rising fuel costs during the show period, which shifts the comparison for buyers who were previously undecided.
The discounts were genuinely large. BYD brought the Atto 3 down ฿80,000 from list, and the Premium trim from ฿799,900 to ฿669,900 — a ฿130,000 campaign price. The list price and the transaction price were plainly two different numbers.
Reading the number honestly
Bookings are not registrations. A show booking is a deposit and an intention. Cancellations, finance rejections and delivery slippage all sit between 132,951 and the number of cars that actually reach owners.
Thailand had just seen exactly this effect in reverse. January 2026 produced a record 44,000+ BEV sales at 48% penetration — but that was an EV3 registration deadline pulling volume forward, and February was quiet as a result. Concentrated demand in Thailand’s EV market has repeatedly been a timing artefact rather than a step change.

What it means if you booked at the show

Confirm local assembly. Under EV3.5 the subsidy only applies to cars assembled in Thailand with packs of 50 kWh or larger.
Expect the service network to lag the sales network. A brand that takes 17,000 bookings in twelve days grows showrooms faster than it grows trained technicians. Ask what work your nearest service point can actually complete, and what has to travel.
